At that time Delhi was named Indraprastha by Pandavas.  Delhi remained capital of Hindu Kingdom for thousands of years.  It is presumed that Delhi got its name from a renowned king Dilli.  And its old name was Dilli only.  But from time to time Name got changed and it assumed its present name of Delhi During British Era when they changed capital of India from Kolkata to Delhi.  And After Independence Delhi was named New Delhi.

Delhi of Shah Jahan was founded near Red fort and Chandni Chowk.  Chandni Chowk used to have a beautiful lake during the days of Shah Jahan.  And from that time it remained capital of India till the time of Bahadur Shah Jafar, the last free king of Mugul Dynasty.  After Bahadur Shah Jafar was jailed by British and British rule came to whole India.  They shifted the capital of India to Kolkota.  But once again it was shifted to Delhi in 1911 and from that time to till this date Delhi is capital of India.  As Indian Government of free India also adopted New Delhi as the Capital of India.
